James Harkin

James Harkin is the Director of Flockwatching. He is social forecaster with over a decade’s experience of analysing social and technological trends and what they mean for companies and institutions. He holds a degree in Law from King’s College London and an M. Phil. degree in politics from Oxford University. Between 1996 and 1999 he taught and lectured in social theory and political economy at the University of Oxford.

In 1999, he exited academic life to work as an analyst of global business, social, political and technological trends (a ‘futurologist’) at The Intelligence Factory in New York, after which he worked for a variety of forecasting agencies, communication agencies and think tanks in New York, London and in continental Europe. In New York he worked for think tanks and communication agencies including Young &Rubicam, The Intelligence Factory and Euro RSCG using fresh data, trends and ideas from around the world to help forecast business and consumer trends and develop strategy.

In London he worked for a variety of commercial forecasting agencies and managed projects for the think-tank Demos, for whom he wrote several pamphlets on emerging technological and demographic trends, including Mobilisation: The growing public interest in mobile technology, and Eternal Youths: How the baby boomers are having their time again. Since then he’s consulted widely to companies, communication agencies, cultural institutions and government departments as a social forecaster. He’s also lectured on contemporary social, technological, business and political trends everywhere from the Edinburgh International Film Festival to the LSE, from the annual conferences of the Arts Marketing Association to Schroders Bank.

James is also a writer and journalist who writes regularly for The Financial Times and The Guardian. Between 2004 and 2009 and 2009 he was, on a part-time basis, Director of Talks at the ICA in London.
